Central Hospital Falun is a county hospital in the Uppsala – Örebro region serving the 270 000 population of Dalarna County. The pathology department is the only pathology lab in the county with 17 000 surgical biopsies a year, a wide cytological service and well-established local contacts with two universities belonging to the region (Uppsala University and Örebro University). The department is internationally recognized in the field of breast pathology, being one of the first pathology laboratories on the world involved into breast cancer screening program. The image collection from this program has been published in award winning books by such leading publishers as Thieme and Springer. The experience and the image material from this department are also used on courses, partly in Sweden, but also in the European School of Pathology. Although belonging to a county hospital, the department is well established in teaching residents in pathology, histology technicians and students.
