The department of pathology takes in charge the samples of the Bordet Institute and those of the hospitals that belong to the Brussels IRIS network (the public Health System of the Brussels area). They cover mammary, gynaecological, thyroid, urological, cutaneous, pulmonary, digestive pathologies, as well as the musculoskeletal system. The Department accesses more than 25.000 biopsies and surgical specimens per year and about 28.000 cytological examinations (Gyn- and non-gynecological specimen). In addition, it performs about 100 autopsies per year. A wide palette of techniques are being used including immunohistochemistry, Fluorescent Hybridization In Situ (FISH), RNA Hybridization In Situ (RISH), RT-PCR (in solution and In Situ), Flow Cytometry, Light/ Fluorescent and Electronic Microscopy. The research activity of the laboratory focuses on translational research.
